In these frightening times of neoliberal governmentality, as Foucault warns when denouncing the threat of subjectivity being captured by the ideal of the “entrepreneur of the self”, alongside the rise of the far-right and the intensification of conservatism on many fronts, we must insistently ask ourselves, with Foucault and with the ancient Greeks and Romans, as highlighted by Norma Telles in her “Four Variations on Epictetus”, and by Tony Hara when he asks, “what do we do with the true life?”. Betting on modes of life that are libertarian, antiracist, playful, and phyllogenous, modes that must be (re)invented, gives us hope and becomes a necessity, for, as we already know: the struggle continues! In what ways has the rapid expansion of neoliberalism across the world affected all our lives, and especially the lives of women, who are generally more undervalued and exploited than men? Beyond the precarization of labor, the dismantling of recently acquired rights, the violent attacks on democracy, and the visible resentment expressed in right-wing mobilizations, this book presents the distinctive reading that Michel Foucault offers of neoliberalism, understood as an “art of government” or a form of “governmental rationality” that demands the production of a new subjectivity: the “entrepreneur of the self”, supposedly free to make every decision of their lives according to cost-benefit reasoning and to invest in themselves as “human capital.” The entrepreneurial logic extends to all spheres of social life, including the private and intimate domains. In this context, even feminisms find themselves deeply threatened, as the very agendas they defend are increasingly captured by the entrepreneurial rationality of this new neoliberal regime. Discussing these phenomena is essential, just as it is essential to invent new forms of resistance, counter-conducts, and struggles against the political, cultural, economic, and moral setbacks that affect our present. “The rise and fall of the tropical paradise”

Publicações “The rise and fall of the tropical paradise” 2021 Margareth Rago, Luana S.Tvardovskas, Mauricio Pelegrini (eds.) Today, the myth of the tropical paradise and all the imaginary representations that surround it are rapidly crumbling, as deeply retrograde political, social, and cultural tendencies rooted in our cultural structure become more accentuated. These tendencies have been noticeable more explicitly since the authoritarian period and even during the phase known as re-democratization. More recently, the pandemic that struck the world accelerated the process of social disintegration in Brazil, resulting from the profound political crisis we have been experiencing since the rise of neofascist groups to power and the advance of neoliberalism. Undoubtedly, we can no longer see ourselves, or be seen, as a paradisiacal country. Quite the contrary: we observe increasing violence, both in forms of labor exploitation and in structural racism and sexism, which strongly shape everyday relations; in gender oppression; in the destruction of forests, woods, and animals; in the genocide affecting Indigenous, Black, transgender, poor, and marginalized populations; and in the homophobic persecution of “minorities” throughout the country.
