“The rise and fall of the tropical paradise”

2021

Margareth Rago, Luana S.Tvardovskas, Mauricio Pelegrini (eds.)

Today, the myth of the tropical paradise and all the imaginary representations that surround it are rapidly crumbling, as deeply retrograde political, social, and cultural tendencies rooted in our cultural structure become more accentuated. These tendencies have been noticeable more explicitly since the authoritarian period and even during the phase known as re-democratization. More recently, the pandemic that struck the world accelerated the process of social disintegration in Brazil, resulting from the profound political crisis we have been experiencing since the rise of neofascist groups to power and the advance of neoliberalism. Undoubtedly, we can no longer see ourselves, or be seen, as a paradisiacal country. Quite the contrary: we observe increasing violence, both in forms of labor exploitation and in structural racism and sexism, which strongly shape everyday relations; in gender oppression; in the destruction of forests, woods, and animals; in the genocide affecting Indigenous, Black, transgender, poor, and marginalized populations; and in the homophobic persecution of “minorities” throughout the country.
